Clindamycin is an antibiotic for dogs and cats used to treat soft tissue, dental, and bone infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria. As a lincosamide antibiotic, Clindamycin works to remove anaerobic bacterial infections by binding to the bacteria's RNA and disrupting the synthesis of proteins the bacteria needs to survive and grow. Recommended Dosage and Administration: Always use as directed by veterinarian. Medication should never be administered without first consulting your veterinarian. The usual dose is 5 mg per pound (11 mg/kg) every 12 hours or 10 mg per pound (22 mg/kg) every 24 hours orally for dogs. For cats the dose ranges from 2.5 mg per pound (5.5 mg/kg) every 12 hours orally to 10 mg per pound (22 mg/kg) every 24 hours orally. The dose and frequency depend on the type of infection treated.
The duration of administration depends on the condition being treated, response to the medication and the development of any adverse effects. Be certain to complete the prescription unless specifically directed by your veterinarian. Even if your pet feels better, the entire treatment plan should be completed to prevent relapse or prevent the development of resistance.
