Methimazole Tablets, USP A drug used for treatment of Hyperthyroidism in cats. Methimazole is indicated in the medical treatment of hyperthyroidism. Tapazole may be used to ameliorate hyperthyroidism in preparation for subtotal thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine therapy. Tapazole is also used when thyroidectomy is contraindicated or not advisable.

Methimazole is an antithyroid drug used to reduce the amount of thyroid hormone produced by the pet's body and is commonly prescribed for the treatment of feline hyperthyroidism.

How does Methimazole Tablet work?
Hyperthyroidism is a condition that occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. The drug Methimazole inhibits or controls the production of the thyroid hormone in cats therefore reducing the symptoms associated with hyperthyroidism.

What are the side effects of Methimazole Tablet?
Any side effects usually occur within the first three months. Side effects may be reduced by beginning at a smaller dose and working up to a full therapeutic dose within a few months. If you notice any of the effects mentioned below, notify your veterinarian. - Decreased appetite, vomiting and lethargy. You may notice these within the first weeks of treatment. - Liver problems (including the above symptoms, plus dark urine, yellowing of the gums, skin or eyes), facial itching resulting in scratching or bleeding tendencies - Underlying kidney disease may become apparent. - Rare cases of myasthenia gravis (severely weakened muscles, difficulty swallowing) - Unusually tired, fever (temperature over 103ºF), bruising or bleeding - If you notice any of these symptoms or anything else unusual, contact your veterinarian

* The manufacturer warns that pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, and nursing mothers should wear gloves when handling tablets, litter or bodily fluids of treated cats.

How can I store Methimazole Tablet?
Store in a tight, light resistant, childproof container in a cool, dry place at room temperature away from heat and direct sunlight.

Cats suffering from (graves disease)feline hyperthyroidism have high metabolic rate and may display thyroid symptoms that include weight loss, weakness of the muscles, increase in appetite and thirst, irregular frequency of urination and bowel movements, rapid heart rate, poor coat, labored breathing and heart murmurs.
Overview
Methimazole is not FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine; however, it is commonly accepted for veterinarians to use this medication in cats.
 
The usual dose in cats is 5mg per cat every 8-12 hours.
 
Blood tests are repeated every 3-4 weeks until the proper maintenance dose is reached, then blood testing is repeated every 3-6 months.
 
This medication is needed for life. If the medication is discontinued, the symptoms will reappear.
